Gorka Izagirre: New Partner at Araex Grands
In an effort to revitalize the Basque region and its culture, in 2005, the Azurmendi family –Eneko and his uncle Gorka– created a bold project for Basque gastronomy and wine-making, becoming role models in both areas. Gorka Izagirre wines vary from a young white wine to more complex wines, aged with lees or fermented in barrels that perfectly match with any kind of gastronomy.
The winery is equipped with cutting-edge technology for the character of the Hondarrabi Zuri and Hondarrabi Zerratia wines to unveil. It features 60 tanks from 1500 to 15000 liters which enable the winery to perform the vinification process plot by plot.
A Heroic Wine
In 2005, the Azurmendi family, lead by Michelin Star Chef Eneko Atxa and his uncle Gorka Izagirre joined forces with a vision to preserve the Txakoli making tradition and share their passion for Basque gastronomy and winemaking with the world. From its very beginning, the aim of the winegrower was to promote the cultivation of local grape varieties and produce unique wines that reflect the great potential of this magnificent viticultural area.
The winegrower has inherited a five hundred year history of winemaking and combined it with cutting edge winemaking technology to produce award winning wines G22, 42 by Eneko Atxa, Gorka Izagirre and Arima. Each wine has its own distinct character, grown in small bunches from our 14 different plots, and expertly blended to be the perfect complement for any occasion.
Txakoli, (pronounced chack-oh- lee), was traditionally made and consumed at home. Txakoli in Basque comes from «etxerako egina» which means «wine for the home». Grown by humble farmers who lived in «caserios» or farmhouses, the Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Zerratia varieties are used to make Txakoli white wine.
D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina
The Basque’s are one of Europe’s oldest cultures, their origins a mystery, their language related to no other on earth. One hears Euskera, spoken here one of the oldest living languages in Europe.
D.O. Bizkaiko Txakolina, which was established in 1994 and covers around 250 hectares of vineyards. There are approximately 44 wineries registered with the appellations.
Characterised by rugged and green mountain hillsides, the 44-hectare vineyard is located in the Northern Coast of Spain. Here we grow Hondarribi Zuri and Hondarribi Zerratia grapes on the sloping green mountains of our homeland, the proximity to the coast and mild rainy Atlantic microclimate allow us to create a distinct wine made from local grape varieties.
Azurmendi*** is the best example of signature cuisine in Bilbao and the only restaurant in the region with three Michelin stars. It has been built into a hillside surrounded by autochthonous vineyards with the underground Gorka Izagirre winery below. It reflects the canons of the Basque identity and integrates photovoltaic solar panels and a geothermic system to produce electricity, harvests rainwater, recycles waste, etc.
